Pickups...

Got the following email from a Model A fellow and here is what he asked:

I've been looking for information on Model A pickups. It seems most of the pickup owners don't know their model # and I can see why. There are the 76A's & 76B's known as Open Cab (Often called Roadster Pick-Up) but then we have the models 78A & 78B just called Pickup; while there is the 82A's & 82B's called Closed Cab pickup. Do you have any information on the differences between the 78 series and the 82 series?

My responce:

The "Open Cab" Pickup or Truck "cab" alone is refered to as the 76-A (28-30);

The "Closed Cab" Pickup or Truck "cab" alone is refered to as the 82-A (28-30);

The "Open Cab" Pickup or Truck "cab" alone is refered to as the 76-B (30-31);

The "Closed Cab" Pickup or Truck "cab" alone is refered to as the 82-B (30-31);

The "Pickup" body alone (the bed, back of the cab) is refered to as 78-A (28-31) (narrow bed);

The "Pickup" body alone (the bed, back of the cab) is refered to as 78-B (31) (wide bed);

The "78" series deals with the bed alone. The "78-A (28-31)" bed is refered to as the "narrow" type bed; where the "78-B (31)" is refered to as the "wide" bed.

All 76-A, 76-B, 82-A and 82-B "cab" styles had the "narrow" 78-A bed; but when the "wide" bed came into existance in 1931, only the 76-B and 82-B "cabs" had them, of coarse the 76-A and 82-A became obsolete about June 1930 when the new model cabs of 76-B and 82-B's were released.

The 82-B also came two ways...the first was with a cloth top, then sometime in 1931 it became a solid top as the cloth top was discontinued. Not sure if the solid top cab was released in conjunction with the wide bed or not.

Any other thoughts on his question?

Thanks.

Pluck
