I used a very good grade of high gloss marine varnish. About 6 coats. Will probably refinish it this summer if I get time.

I bought oak from Home Depot and trimmed to fit. Stained it just a shade. Because it won't be left in the rain I see no reason to varnish it. Will oil it occasionally.
