Pickup bed wood

I am installing new wood in a pickup box and would like to know if there is any preferred way to seal it before installing and painting that wont adversely affect the topcoat. The old wood was epoxy primed and painted but still split and weathered bad from water. Thnx
 
I applied several; coats of marine spar varnish to both Sides and edges. then painted the under side Simi flat black. so far so good no cracks or splits
 
The sun degrades materials more than a person would think. Tires on a collector car that is parked outside a few months a year is a perfect example when compared to another parked under cover.
