Pickup Bed (early)

I shouldn't complain too much about the cold, I know the guys in MN & NE have me beat by a longshot in that area.

I wanted to mention that my truck has a Nov 29 frame number so the holes in the bed we've been discussing would not be unique to an early vehicle, or maybe not found at all on an early vehicle, I couldn't say.

Dudley, my thoughts on the wood screws over carriage bolts, or threaded screws, is the time/labor and materials involved for assembly. Seems like Henry always tried to use as few parts as possible and quickest assembly method.

I haven't seen any old pickup beds with the wood strips long gone and rusty carriage bolts or threaded screws still in place. I'm thinking that the wood dried up, or rotted and fell off, so then the woodscrews were free to go on their own journey, ha.

It's all just a guess at this point until someone chimes in who has some original strips still in place on their bed.

Dan,

I don't have a clue were my back panel came from or what year, I know it's not T.
The wood screw makes sense, or you would see beds with 4 bolts, rusted, and no
wood.

Not sure if you still need this info but my Nov. 29 pickup bed had the wood strip still attached (very bad shape) and it was attached with wood screws. Bob

Charles, do you think this was something the dealership might have done to stop the noise? Wouldn't Ford have just moved the bed back 1/4 inch? My 29 CCPU dose not have any holes.

This is a curious conundrum:confused:. My early (~2” longer than the later style) had numerous bullet holes in this section so when I welded them I did not account (nor take photos) of any deliberate holes. To this point I have only seen 2 photos (Mr. Mordigians and the one in the book, both shown on this thread) of these holes. Curiously they do not seem to be in the same location and the size of the wood seems to be somewhat different … sooo, I wonder if you are correct. It seems like a lot of work to remove the bed just to accomplish this task. On the other hand, I guess one could randomly drill holes, slip the wood between the cab/bed and simply screw them I place. Ah, the joys of this adventure!!:)

With well over 1,000 hits, no approximate time line when it started or stopped...odd or not?
Why would they pull the bed to drill 4 holes?
Hopefully, Bob P. can give us a size on the wood screw.

The holes in my Pickup (Body 78-A), that is the BED, are spaced as such:

Vertically they are 5-3/4 inches apart;

Horizontaly they are 15-1/8 inches apart and 7-9/16 inches from center.

Holes spaced evenly from top to bottom.

Some of these "bed's had them...some did not (I have one that does not) and as stated above, may have been done at the dealership.

To my knowledge, there was no information sent to the dealerships from the factory to make this adjustment.

It would be interesting for those who have holes in the front panel section to give your dimensions also...if the holes were "factory" punched, I would think that all the holes would be the same throughout UNLESS the factory changed the punching distance.

Also, just what kind of bolt or screw is holding them if they still exist?...so far we see that they were wood screws on the above post.

So you guys...just what is your "hole" spacing on your front panel on your 78-A Pickup Body if in fact they are there? I wonder if any have shown up on the 78-B (wide bed) Pickup Body?

Pluck

Just another coal to add to the fire, Dose anyone see any signs of denting or scratching on the wall of the cab where these wood blocks would have touched? Hummmmm...?
