Pete & Jakes Reverse Eye Spring Installation

Make some blocks that will take the place of the stock location eye and use a normal spring spreader. Ask around maybe some has a set to lend. Bob

Thanks Bob,

Is it possible to do the job without the spreader?

Some have suggested using a block to set the proper height on one side after putting the pin through the eye on the other side.

Attach the bracket at the top of the spring, then slowly let the weight of the car down on the spring with a hydraulic jack, letting the eye slide on the block until it lines up with the hole on the other side, then push the pin through.

This sounds too easy...

a spring spreader will not work with a reverse eye spring because there is no eyelet to push against. you will have to put the spring in the cross member & then shackle one end & use wood blocking on the other end & use a ratchet strap to pull the spring down far enough to get the other shackle slid in. have someone help you do this. use a good ratchet strap & be careful.

Yes it will. I have some adapters that clamp onto the top and bottom of the main leaf out by the eyes. This allows the spreader to be used as normal as it pushes against the lower portion of the adapter.

I made this. Works every time. Simple.

The Guys at Sacramento Vintage claim it can be done without using a spreader or adapters. Has anyone accomplished the task under these conditions in their own garage with success?

Yes, the front spring should be installed with out any spreader if all is proper. The center of spring shackle holes should be 5" less than the distance of the center distance of the perch pin holes. It should slide in.

Thanks for your reply Jim,

I'll make some Hardwood blocks at the right height for the eyes to line up. There's a lot of weight up front, it should slide across the axle easy enough.

The rear might be a little tricky though.

But maybe I'm putting the cart ahead of the Horse.

Any thoughts, reccomendations or tips regarding the removal of the old springs phase of the operation?

Set one end in the shackles then place a 2x4 on the other end, wrap a chain around the bottom of your floor jack and around the axle and center of the spring, with the axle on top of the jack, jack it up until you can get the shackle in.

I install the fronts with no problem. But the back needs a spring spreader in my opinion. Although it can be done without one and a little muscle.

Thanks 34. Just normal 3/4" square steel thin wall and two 1/4" bolts. Used it about 20-25 times now on my cars and friends with no problem.
