Personalised registration numbers

Here in the UK we have an enormous (and expensive !) market for "personalised" or "cherished" car registration numbers.

Here's one I spotted the other evening on a Ford Ranger. I spoke to the driver. It belongs to the Ford Motor Company here in the UK.

Really good ones cost a packet; For example DAV 1D would relieve you of £50,000 !

Rude ones are occasionally seen...

FU 2 was often seen in the 1970's on a yellow E-Type Jaguar
owned by Fiona Richmond....a limey **** star

5EXY is attached to a Porsche Turbo and as for PEN15;well
someone must own it !

Do you Yankee boys indulge yourselves in such atrocities ?
:):):):):)

If I understand correctly, this is a licence plate number, but how can both the trucks in your pictures have the same number? Isn't that defeating the reason to have an identifying plate number at all?

Yes, personalized plates are available here, and bring in a few extra sheckles for the DMV's. They do monitor the requests, and deny any request that may be offensive to someone. They take all the fun out of it, to never seeing one that raises eyebrows!

Here, we censorship galore on plates! Since the arrival of custom plated, the state agencies (everything in auto law is by state here, not national) have all requests scrutinized and a battery of extra people with language skills on call, in case of atrocities by immigrants. I believe there have even been confiscations of plates that someone slipped through...
Early on, some clever people came up with insults that read properly in the rearview mirror of the car in front...now, of course, the censor has a mirror.
We do have a lot of creative ones still...along with thumpingly stupid "personalized" ones like "David87"

Elementary, Dr. Watson. Elementary.
The plates are on the front and back of the same Ford Ranger pickup.

A common joke here, by the way, is something like "In West Virginia, a custom plate is one made for you by your uncle", the joke being that in many states the plates are manufactured in prisons.

Maine DMV has a web site where you can type in your request and see if it is already in use. I had one and a lot of ideas for others but I decided it wasn't for me and got a regular numerical "Antique Auto" plate......Mark

Old Henry beat me to it ! Yes one's on the front and the other, the rear. Yes, these are vehicle license plates. Mandatory to have one on the front and another on the rear. On modern cars the rear plate is yellow and the front white. Both are made of reflective material so they can be easily seen at night, spotted by the "constabulary" (POLICE !) and flashed by speed cameras !

It is not unknown for thieves to steal number plates and put them on an identical car.
Commit a crime; drive as fast as you like and the police come knocking......

If you are indulging in a more than friendly relationship with your neighbour's wife, or her sister or indeed her brother; it's advisable to refrain from driving a Porsche, Bentley,Ferrari attached to a personalised number plate....Ford38V8 please don't ask me why !

It is rumoured, (or so I'm told) that one can buy non-reflective or "confusing" plates that defeat the speed cameras! Once more I'm told that these consist of a multitude of reflective prisms that confuse the speed camera !

Some years ago I was privileged to own 1 CAR.....I exchanged it for £1000

Hindsight is a wonderful thing

I have them on a few of my cars, over here they have different types all at varying cost. Some are called retro plates for instance either white on black or black on white they have three letters, three numerals but must start wit an x or a u. So some have been lucky and gone for USA 066 etc. I chose this type for my pickup and ended up wit XXI 935 . Just recently I bought a Triumph herald convertible the plate is CUN735 it's a standard issue one however as you can see it can be taken in a particular way... The wife said think you should change that one mmm.. Ended up going simple RED 061 .. This car I have named the red devil.. But that's another story.

Does anyone live in a state that lets you use original plates? I have a matching set of Vermont 1934s but they wont let me use them. I dont see why since they are very different from what is issued now. Ken

Ken,
Down here over the VT border in MA we have "year of manufacture" registration. If you have a plate from the year of your car and that number is not in use you can register it and put it on your car. $50/year.
John

In the UK one can buy a number that is as old or older than your car but not newer.

Does that make sense?

To clarify.....if you have a car made in 1986 for example you can have 1986 or earlier plate but not one issued in 1987..

In California you can have original plates. I have a set of original 1938 plates on my pickup. You are required to submit them to DMV for inspection and if they find them serviceable then you can use them. It is nice to have original plates on my old truck.

Florida has a web site also where you can see if certain numbers/phrases are in use. I use it all the time when I get bored just to see what I can come up with. :D

I actually have on on my motorcycle and I have one coming for my '36. I'll post a pic if it ever gets here.

In Maine you can use year of manufacter plates, but must register it as an antique and carry the antique plates with you to prove it is registered . I got stopped for a red light. I had a 70 Chevy truck with 1970 CT plates. The lady officer claimed it was stolen because she couldn't trace the 70 plates, They had to get 3 other officers to fiquere it out. Finaly she agreed with me but cost $165 for ticket and insurance charges me $100 extra each year for 5 years. This is only the second traffic ticket I have ever got since 1956. The other one was in 1974. That didn't make any difference to Hanover Ins.
