When I did you 40 coupe over 35 yr's ago I had the tinted glass cut longer and left out the center rubber and chrom piece. I butted the glass together in the middle and left a space that I could run a credit card down. I then took clear selacon and run a bead down the middle and wipped it off. You cain't even see it and it's been there 35yr's.

I'm also looking for ideas on securing the original windshield and frame in the original opening without using crank. Someone suggested using turnbuckles to hold the frame tight in the opening. Any other suggestions?

When I installed a 40 dash in my 39 sixty years ago I made some kind of bracket to hold the windshield tight. I haven'ted at it since as it still keeps the water out.

Hi, I'm trying to understand your purpose for "fixing" your glass in place? Is it for practical reasons: such as better visibility, trying to avoid leaks, or the crank handle annoys you. Perhaps it is cosmetic and you prefer an open view with no center divider and just plain fewer obstructions in your line of sight.

I sealed my 39 pickup windshield at the insistence of my mentor, Ken Bailey. He stated that the windshields always leaked and you really didn't need it for ventilation with the cowl vent right below it. He said it was just like those guys who wear a belt and suspenders. We simply put additional packing around the gasket surface when we installed the windshield and cranked everything up real tight with a wrench. It has been that way for 17 years, it looks just exactly like it is supposed to but you can't open the windshield without removing all of the bolts from the crank mechanism.

Hope this helps, Toby

Nothing like a nice breeze coming through a cranked out window! I could never seal mine up! people always comment on how cool it looks when the windshield is open! besides!, a little water leaking around the window is no big deal!

Agreed.......I think the crank-out window is one of the coolest features of this era of Fords. Wish my '40 had one!

I'm with Felix37 and Joe AZ. If it leaks, wipe up the water with paper towels. Just how often does that happen anyhow. Most of us do not drive in the rain.

A slight correction just in case. "Glued" in windshields are done with urethane adhesive, NOT epoxy.

A buddy did one of those single piece windshields in a '39 coupe years ago. For all that they look like they'd have distortion at the bend it was a surprisingly clear view from the inside. To my eye it was uglier than a jar full of pickled....never mind.....
Using modern urethane adhesive intended for windshields should do the trick with the stock frame and seals so that it looks original while non-functional. For any who are skeptical about strength, modern cars are engineered to factor in a bonded windshields as part of the upper structural members. Check with a local auto glass dealer for application as placement and size of the bedding bead is important to the success. You may have to hunt a bit to find one who is willing to work beyond cookie cutter installs however.

I fixed the crank on my 39 peeekup I always drive with the window open a bit. Everything else leaks so it makes me no mind.
