Paypal question

I've had over 200 experiences with paypal, both as a buyer and seller and have never, ever, once had a single problem with paypal. I've done domestic and international transactions with not a single problem.

CYA and you'll be fine.

A little exercise I did recently on paypal.

Needed to pay for some parts from USA to OZ.

Other end did not have paypal.

Could not transfer money direct to his credit or bank account.

International money order was quoted as about $30 at my end and more fees (unqoted) at the other end.

The item was about $125 US.

I could get USA cash here at $8 plus 3% AUD and send cash.

But USD was a minimum of $250 from my bank .

Every which way was a hassle or a ripoff.

Finally, PayPal said, all the USA end needs to do is open a PayPal account against a bank account, (did not need a credit card attached), and i could send money direct thru PayPal using his email address.

I could have sent AUD money direct thru paypal and paid my credit card international transaction fee , or put money into my end paypal account as USD and send direct and pay 1% commission.

There is a place in PayPal where the sender can choose to pay the 1% fee , so the seller gets the full amount in his own denomination.

Was a bit of a hassle to set it all up, but it was a good learning experience.

Sorry but Pay Pal is a safe and secure system for the transfer of funds, it allows sellers, college students, and individuals to be able to collect money in way they normally would not do, there are over 30 million users of pay pal for the ease and safety that it has, the horror stores that everyone like to bring up are almost non existent now that they are owned by ebay. I have been using it for the last 14 years and will continue to use it to collect money, pay bills, have a debit card, transfer funds, get a 1.5% pay back on all my purchases and collect interest on the money in there. Once funds are in there you have the option of having them send you a check for 1.00 or for free to have it transferred to your bank acct. Simple and easy and YES they do require you do record the 2 penny deposit they make in your bank acct to verify YOU for again your safety. I very very rarely will ever buy any item at all on ebay if someone does NOT offer pay pal, What are you afraid of the little fee heck of a lot less than MC or Visa charges and i get the safety that pay pal will back me up when i dont get the merchandise or get the wrong merchandise, A money order does NOT do that in any form. I am one of the 100 ORIGINAL members of ebay and have seen it all and more and pay pal is the best thing created.
JMHO!!

But on the other side of the story..

An acquaintance sold a vintage bike for 3.5K from OZ to USA and he paid thru paypal.

The USA dude said the bike was not described correctly and got a full charge back and KEPT THE BIKE.

Most likely he said to the OZ guy, it is here come and get it if you want.

The OZ guy now refuses to sell out of country.

So, there are some horror stories out there.

When I sold a my last 2 items thru ebay, one for 11.1K and the other 7k, I demanded CASH on pickup.

No paypal, no personal cheques, no bank cheques, it was all laid out in the ad, so they knew beforehand what the deal was.

I use pay pal, I sold 2 bikes totaling 20k, deposit was made through pay pal and cashiers check for balance at pick up, that is when the bank told me that it would take 2 wks to absolutely clear, sweated for 2 wks but everything was fine. After that it was pay pal or cash.

If I am correct, there really is no problem with PayPal itself but with the people who have figured out a way to beat the system. Isn't that what the fear about using PayPal is??

Six days ago I sold some vintage tools, the buyer said he would like to pay thru paypal. personally I don't trust paypal, but I said I would take paypal. I invoiced him thru paypal this past Monday, but he hasn't been notified yet by paypal. I check my paypal account this AM and it shows payment pending. He is afraid now,if he just sends payment directly to my account, they may ding him for the invoice that he hasn't received and he will end up paying twice.

I have been stung in the past with misrepresented items purchased, I never pay out of my bank account, I always use a credit card thru paypal. I don't have to wait for paypal "to resolve the issue" I can just contact my credit card co. for a refund. Paypal doesn't want you to do this, maybe it gives them a black eye, but I do not like getting screwed!

I used to do alot thru ebay (600+) but a guy that I paid 3 minutes after winning gave me my only negative rating after I posted a positive for him. I had requested a positive feedback and he was pxxsed off because I asked. Shortly later I stopped selling and now only buy 3 or 4 items a year by credit card.

PayPal is a business and all they're interested in is collecting their fees. If a transaction goes off without a hitch then it's convenient and useful. If you have a problem and you're expecting some sort of "customer service" from PayPal, you're in for an unpleasant surprise. In the last ten years or so I've had three bad experiences with PayPal--two as a seller, one as a buyer.

In the two cases where I sold something and took PayPal payment, the buyer disputed the charges (once saying they didn't receive the item, once saying it was defective). Despite having a tracking number and signature confirmation on the first item, PayPal refunded the buyer and debited my account. In the second case, PayPal refunded the buyer and debited my account and the buyer kept the "defective" item.

In the case where I bought something, the seller sent me something that was completely different than what I ordered and though I was willing to pay shipping to send the item back, the seller (and thus PayPal) wouldn't refund the purchase price.

So essentially, you can get stiffed on either end.

Timothy is 100% correct: The main thing to keep in mind is that you DO NOT want to give PayPal access to your bank account. There is nothing in the PayPal agreement that prevents PayPal from making a withdrawal that creates and overdraft on your account if there's a charge. Once you sign the PayPal terms, PayPal can pretty much do whatever they want with your bank account in terms of withdrawals. For instance, if you get a credit and then the buyer disputes the transaction and they decide to take that money back, they're going to withdraw it directly from your account. If you've already spent that money, you're looking at an overdraft. In my opinion this is a Bad Thing®.

The "safe" way to use PayPal is to ONLY give them a credit card number. If you have a problem, contact your credit card provider and let PayPal work it out with them. The one time I had a problem with a seller, that's what I did. AmEx basically told PayPal to suck it and I got my money back. If you're selling stuff, when you have a balance in your PayPal account, either use it to buy something you want from someone who takes PayPal or have them send you a check.

In the U.S.A your liability for fraudulent credit card transactions is limited to $50. There's essentially no limitation on the bad things that can happen if someone has direct access to your bank account.

Dan, will PayPal allow you to set up an account with just a credit card? I was under the assumption that they required a bank account. Couldn't just a credit card simply be one of those "prepay" cards that has your name on it that has no verification of who the person is? I would imagine PayPal has taken steps to avoid use of such.

I look up and read the negatives on sellers.

I wanted to purchase an item from a buyer but it looked like he had a poor record. I looked up and read the feedback. It turned out that a buyer from out of the counrty bought 10 items at once and posted a negative for each one because it "took too long to receive items".

I bought from him and had no problems at all.

If you look @ E-BAYS guide lines, It says to ONLY ship to the address on the payment details page.. Or it use to anyway..
