Paybacks are a B_tch…

So I am sure my Dad is laughing after all the times he had to rescue me in the middle of the night from my own stupidity…. like the time he had to get me an hour away because I routed my battery cable to close to the header and it shorted out and melted the battery terminal off…..

My 19 year old Daughter called at 11PM with a "Flat Tire". 18 degrees with a wind chill of zero. I get there and this is her flat tire. I get out her cheap jack and it promptly sinks into the ground as there is no shoulder. Fortunately the jack in my truck had a thicker base and I found a firmer spot to get it up.

What does this have to do with old fords? I am now adding a 12" x 12" x 1" piece of plywood to all of my cars tool kits. Since with the older cars we tend to go back roads, the likely hood of having to get off in the grass to avoid oncoming traffic is pretty high.

Just a suggestion…. OK and the tire is pretty funny…. she said it was making a noise but she wanted to get it home so I can check it out.

as much as it hurts, this is your fault for not teaching her about cars in general and their upkeep--yeah I know Daddy's little girl. We have two sons-so what do I know. Very glad everything came out alright and everyone is safe.. But to add something serious. I like the idea of the plywood-going to do that today for our cars.

Ouch!
My Mother always said," If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." And yes, I AM the father of two.

PS - Jim1932: That's what Dads do. Good for you !!

I think he meant it tongue in cheek...

That's not fair! His daughter is a girl, remember? No amount of instruction could have prepared her for that peculiar turn of events. She well may have thought the noise she heard was caused by lumps in the gasoline. :D

Re: Paybacks are a B_tch…

A friend has a grandson in college. One night his grandson called and said he had a flat tire on his car. My friend told his grandson to put the spare and take the flat tire to a tire shop. After a pause his grandson said I don't know how. My friend made about a 200 mile round trip to replace the tire.

I bet I could have changed that flat by age of 11-12 years old. Times have changed and we rarely have flats....

One would think that with temps that cold the ground would be frozen solid as a rock.. It is around here.

Now that's what just doesn't figure! Kids today seem not to have an ounce of horse sense in their heads. :( They can stare at a set of specific tools and not have a clue what to do with them.

...But then, the same kids could say the same thing about us old guys and computers.

Re: Paybacks are a B_tch…

i was gasing up one night at a station here in san antonio and i heard a strange noise coming on the street getting louder. it was some young girl driving a honda at about 35 mph, right front tire was completely gone with the alumimum wheel worn down flat. she had probably driven 5 to 10 miles to wear it down that far.... wounder what her father said the next morning....

Re: Paybacks are a B_tch…

my daughter shredded a tire like that once and i said didn't you notice anything? she said, i kept stepping on the gas and it wouldn't go any faster.

Re: Paybacks are a B_tch…

My Son as a teenager always seemed to have trouble keeping enough gas in his tank to get home from work. After a few times, I told him I would help him out but it would be a $5 charge. I got $5 once then he called his G'pa but unknown to Son, G'pa knew the program also and after another $5 he learned to keep his gas up.

Sooooooooooo, many years later when I needed some help as my 40 was having trouble I called him and after a long period of laughing, he said "that will cost you $5". Love that kid. lol

Re: Paybacks are a B_tch…

Having Kids is vastly overrated.
Last year, my first night as a Florida "snowbird" I jumped the curb with a mint, low mileage, 2002 T bird I just bought. I was sick over the car, no damage I could see but I'm still concerned about it. The next morning I called my son and told him about it. Hoping to be consoled and reassured about the lack of apparent damage he told me " Congratulations Dad !! you just passed your Florida Old Fart Road Test"
I told his Mother not to feed him when we brought him home from the Hospital. She never listened to me.......... she fed his sister when we brought her home too.

Re: Paybacks are a B_tch…

My ex-wife had the same problem with a real nice '72 Le Mans convertible. She came home from work and said, "My car is making a funny noise, can you look at it?" I did and the right front tire looked almost as bad as the one in the picture. I asked her "Didn't you think that there might be something wrong and you should stop and look?" She said, "Well it was making a funny noise, but I just turned up the radio so I couldn't hear it."

Notice I said "ex-wife".
