Patent plate...original ?

This was on ebay, is this an original Plate? It looks like it has a different
finish, how do you tell?

It appears it was/is the "real deal" however a visual might need to be confirmed. Vince Falter researched this several years ago and it is all about the numbers.

I don't see how it can be the real deal. It must be aluminum. If it were zinc it would be gray after all these years. Now I certainly can't say they all looked alike but compare it to mine below. Sorry for the crappy pic.

Well there you go. I had been using Vince's info (http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/patentplates.htm) as my search method not realizing there was font differences too. Good to know!!

Based on the original drawings I've examined, the later plates were in fact aluminum, not zinc. This is also evident when you find originals that are missing all the lettering but look like a smooth aluminum plate. The zinc plates often completely corrode away.

What is "later"?

the one on my '30 is definately aluminum. cant read a thing on it either.
