Pass-A-Lite

The heating was regulated by the operator since it had to be pushed or rotated and held manually for 4 or 5 seconds. The elements can burn out if held in too long. The element may be burned out or it has contact issues with the electrical connections.

OK, but it's called: Pass-A-Lite. So you would pull the knob away from the unit and hand it off? They call it 'wireless' too.

They made several types. One with the big knob and the smaller types but they all will pull away from the mounting to light a cigarette. The heating coils get plugged up from lack of cleaning out the ash particles. The ash absorbed moisture and causes corrosion. If a person takes care of them then they will last a long time but nothing lasts forever. A person may be able to use a modern lighter coil to restore one but I've never tried it. I quit smoking so long ago that I don't care if they work or not.

OK, I got it to work. Once you power it, push the knob in, you'll hear a clicking. I rotated after and the heating coil was quickly. Tho I've never smoked, I'm always interested about that era, and it doesn't have to be the Model A. Todays Breakfast, welcomed a new member with this '31 Chev!!
