Parking brake repair

I pulled my rear brake drum because it was making a terrible noise after using the parking brake. It seems I am missing toggle pins and one of the springs. I am about to order a new parking brake shoe band, springs and toggle pins. It seems like that’s all I need to fix this. Am I missing anything? Should I get anything else when I do this job? Thanks!

The early emergency brakes were not really emergency brakes and should only be used as parking brakes. I forget the details but it has to do with the mechanism jamming up. There is something in the Service Bulletins about this.

You have a lot of issues going on.

#1 The pins are on backwards. Cotter pins should be closest to the backing plate.
Flat head of the pins closest to the drum.

#2 The bridge on the carrier is bent. It should be the same contour as the carrier.
Most likely bent from using the parking or emergency brake as a brake.

#3 Some of the parts have been rubbing against the drum.

If you need help / advice, call me.

Hi Randy,
Thanks for the advice. I'll flip those cotter pins around when I put it back together. The rubbed parts all still seem solid. I was thinking of just reusing them. Do you think I can bend the bridge on the carrier to make it parallel to the carrier? Or should I replace it? Seems like most of the job is straightforward. It will be the springs on the actuating lever that are a pain to put back on.

Pull the hub/drum on the other side and see what it looks like. Otherwise you're only doing 1/2 a job.

I would replace everything. The parts available from the vendors have the changes that Ford made mid production to improve the parking brakes.

The right side looks good except for the cotter pins on the toggle bolts face outward. Back on the left side the carrier plate is bent pretty bad. Add one more part to the order from Tam’s.
