painting with 'no paint' areas question

I figure you folks have used some good tricks to keep paint off of some of the detail areas when painting. items such as carburetor passage plugs, data tags, models, etc. anyone care to share? I know we always used to use Vaseline or chap-stik, but not working so good on my restoration project right now. tape is NOT an option.

When painting Zenith carburetors and distributors, I push small pieces of paper towel into any screw holes or oil holes. The paper towel plugs are easily removed with tweesers. When the carburetors have dried I use the point of a box cutter to scrape off paint on the brass plugs.

The groove on a distributor where the top plate slides, I press a length of insulated wire into the groove to keep the paint out. The threaded plug where the pop-out cable screws in I screw in a 3\8 pipe plug.

I use masking tape on larger areas such as the base of the distributor and the top of the shaft tunnel. On areas with an edge break it is easy enought to apply masking tape over the edge and shear it with the downward thrust of the blade of a box cutter.

Thanks all, I will try again this weekend hopefully to use the grease method will work better than in the past, and also experiment with something else... will report back!

Grease applied with a broken off round toothpick worked for me. the brass & copper items were 1/8" plugs that stand out nicely against the black carburetor.
