Painting wheels-a simple idea from a simpleton

I feel bad about the stuff I am going to post because I copied the idea from a fellow that presented it at our Model A club meeting last night. But I added a couple of ideas to it.

Anyway it is a stand to mount one wheel at a time to paint. Hey, I am retired and I can take all year to paint 5 wheels. So I think some pictures will explain it better that I can. Will try to post as many as this site will allow me.

It has two wheels that fit on each side of the wheel. The larger on is about 10" is dia on one side and about 9 3/4" on the other side. The cut to make it is on a slant and that is why it is larger on the outer rim than on the inner. The little wheel is about 2 3/4" in dia at it's largest side and can be anything smaller on the inside. Mine is about 1 1/2" on the inside. The rod is 3/8" and is about 30" long. I plan to paint the inside of the hub section before mounting each wheel because you cannot get to it after it is mounted. Won't hurt if this area is messed up a bit because it is never seen.

I will try to get as many pictures as I can posted. May have to do two or so postings.

Would appreciate any comments or ideas you may have. I could add a few to start with:

1. Crazy idea, will never work.
2. It will take all year to paint 5 wheels.
3. Inside the hub will get messed up.
4. Etc.....
OR
IT IS A GREAT IDEA!

I know there was another thread a few days ago but thought I would just add another idea.

Fred, I must have left the meeting before this came out. I think it's a neat idea and if I ever have to paint wheels again I'll use this method. Thanks for posting.

No reason what they won't work. Its fancy :) Just a rod through the wheel ,alone, won't look as good, but it would get the job done too. See the other wheel painting thread.

I just read one on the HAMB using a ceiling fan motor. It had 5 lugs, 3 speeds, and a light in the middle!

But you know Brent, how many cheap box fans are used to vent a simple garage when someone paints their car in there?? Thousands and thousands each year, hundreds daily I promise you. So by the book, yes it's possible. But in reality, but not too likely.

I wouldn't put money on one blowing up unless your spraying gas into, it most likely wont happen. I'd be more worried about the paint getting inside and gumming up the motor.

I built my wheel spinner from an old engine stand. At first it was powered by a small gear reduction motor, but after it burned up and I needed to use it for a job, I found that I liked it better without. Now I just index it by hand and can start-and-stop it at will. When it was motorized it was just a process of fogging the wheel, which was wasteful of paint, hard to see what was getting good coverage and what was not, and disorienting! Have good equilibrium if you go the motorized route because if you're susceptible to motion sickness it will just make you throw-up!

Now I manually index it to hit every surface, give it a whirl to spray the rim, and when I'm satisfied with the last coat, just stand there and spin it for a few minutes until the paint tacks enough not to run. I cut the upright to kick the spindle back at an angle so the work is facing you naturally when standing there and it's spaced far enough from the upright to reach all the surfaces:

Works Great! The only downside of this project is that it may outlast me. A bit of a slow process.
