Painting and Rust Prevention

I am just starting on my 29 and want to stop the surface rust inside the doors. I was planning on removing light rust with hand sanding and then painting the inside of the doors with something like Rust-Oleum. Also a question about painting the engine. Is everything except the "Long Block" painted Black, starter: generator, water pipeing ect.

Distributor, starter, generator, carb, lower water pipe, radiator fan, front and rear motor mounts, and oil pan are black. Also the two steel covers on the flywheel housing and bellhousing are black, as well as the engine side splash pans.

IF You have the Tools, or Access to the Right Tools. Do It right Now, you wont regret it Later. You say You are just starting to Restore the Car.

1st of all if this is your first attempt doing Rust Removal, Don't be afraid, Educate Your Self on how to do It Right the First Time, 2nd Don't be Afraid, Think Twice before you do anything.

Remove the Door, make a Tank an follow the Process in the Link, Below. It will Remove the Rust Cheaply, and Paint too. Then if you have Access to a Sand Blaster, Gently clean off the bad spots, the Tanking didn't Removed. No Blaster, use a 4 1/2 Grinder with a Flat Burred Brush, Not the Cone Type, the Flat Notted Wheel works Best. The Grinder can be a cheap one from Harbor Fright or E-Bay.

After all the rust is Removed, before it gets a chance to rust again, Spray or use a Paint brush. Apply Phosphoric Acid to all Surfaces to Prevent Re-Rusting, when Dry, Prime. Phosphoric Acid can be Bought a Ace Hardware or most other Pain Stores for $24.00 a Gallon.

If you don't want to do this process, just brush onRust-olem, better than Nothing?

Just exactly the answer I was looking for. Thanks. I am planning on taking off the Pan, cleaning out the goop, and was wondering exactly what color to use. I have the "Ford Green" but didn't know what color the pan should be.

I was really impressed with the link to the "Electrolytic Rust Removal" process. I think I could make a frame out of plastic sheeting in a 2X6 frame in the driveway. I don't have a charger that big but an adjustable power supply might work. As for the disks, I see in the Eastwood catalog a number of what I think you mean by knoted disks. They call them "3M Cleaning Wheels" and "3M Scotch-Brite Cleaning & Stripping Disks for angle grinders". So will get busy, thanks

I've found recently that the molasses does in deed work as does potassium and they can be brushed on , and mixed but gloves and a mask are a must , that potassium will kill you don't breath it or get on your skin . I tested those two on a 19" wheel and the rust is gone right down to bare clean metal , jasco has a product or had one with potassium they also include phosphoric acid in some product . I prefer something that can be cleaned off rather than painted over as (por15) . I do recommend the electrolysis method if you can find a vat big enough .

wiOv all you need is a small Battery Charger, all I use is a 4-10 Amp Charger. Yes the Tub made out of 2x6's will suffice.

As for the Flat Wire Wheels, Lowe's, Home Depot, or any good Hardware, or Auto Parts stores sell them for about $12.00 Believe me once you use the Flat Wheels, you will be using it to clean up everything, Rust, Paint etc.
