Paint

I agree with PetesPonies. The biggest problem in using lacquer is locating slow drying thinner. The slowest drying lacquer thinner is probably 10 times faster than enamel reducer and enamel. The lowest cost would be Rustoleum gloss black. I won't make any recommendations, do as you please. I used Rustoleum and added universal super wet look hardner at the rate of 4 ozs.per quart of paint and reduced with fast enamel reducer at the rate of two parts paint to one part reducer and this can vary, usually a little thinner on the last coat. I did this on my september 29 strip down, its just a fun model A that I have owned for over fifty years. I painted it five years ago and it has a deep gloss. I keep it inside most of the time.

Very true RTC $$
Supplies are so expensive that it comes down to the pride of painting the car youself.
Example: 3M Wet/dry sand paper $40 for a sleeve. Going to need 80, 100, 180, 320, 400 plus 800, 1200 and 1500 for wet sanding. Sanding blocks, 2 guns or extra tips 1.4 and 1.8, high quality respirator/supplied air reccomended, tac rags, masking paper and tape, primer/paint, putty. An assortment of chemicals. All adds up to a very expensive proposition. But it is fun and rewarding!

I will be looking at Magnet Paints real hard. Go to Magnetpaints.com. US made industrial and commercial paints and coatings. All the colors, but very few shades. But you want black, so what? They have a chassis paint they call "Chassis Saver" that I bought for mine. Keith True from fordbarn has used them also with good results. I can't recall prices, but they're less than most. I think that they can be shipped without VOC charges.

Brent, I've been told that laquer goes on easier and looks prettier, but the sunlight will cause it to crack? I know nothing about paints and painting. The two vehicles I've painted in my life were hardly "show quality" when I fionished. You could say that they were one color and that's about all.

Wow, you want it to be "almost show quality" ...but not quite. Do I also understand you to say that enamel paint lasts longer than lacquer? I would truly be obliged if you would explain the definition of 'almost show quality'. Also, just curious what color(s) you are wanting to paint your car.

I'm painting my car black with apple green trim and wheels and I don't know what paint last longer. But I've been told to use enamal paint because it don't crack like the others do. Or else you guys tell me what to paint it I'm staying with the colers that are listed. But I just don't know what kind of paint enamal or ????. Let me know tanks reggiedog

My experience has been that catalyzed urethane will be the longest lasting. Lacquer only cracks when the substrates are improperly applied. The same generally applies to enamels too.

If you are painting the car and are on a tight budget, any of the cheaper lines of paint (even Tractor Supply paint) will work to fit your needs. If it were mine and I were in your shoes, I would look at applying Marhyde's Hi-gloss Hardener into one of those $30 a gallon blacks to aide in color hold-out.

I agree with Brent, catylized urethane is the most durable. Just to add to what he has said if you want a low cost urethane, Kirker makes a low priced urethane type paint that you mix one quart of activator with three quarts of paint. They say that you don't have to thin but in some conditions a little thinner will help, I keep urethane reducer handy and it can be bought by the quart. I have used this paint on model A fenders and it looks very good. Call smart shoppers in Kentucky 800-541-0399 Ask for their catalog. Smart shoppers have the best prices on most body shop supplies and several brands of paint and primers and paint guns. I like to use Feather fill primer made by Evercoat it is isocyanate free and uses peroxide as a hardner.

NO I don't know if the enamel paint will last longer that's why I'm here to find out what is best to spray the car with. But I've been told that lacquer paint over time you get what he told me is spiders in the paint. So I want to use the best paint that will last for a long time. So I don't have to repaint it in my life time how ever long that is.
