Paint Question

PO used rattle can matte spray on a small repair spot on my rumble seat lid. Has anyone had success in compounding and buffing matte paint to a obtain a reasonable high gloss?

Probably not as matte finish has added silicon dioxide to reduce the gloss. You could try a clear gloss over the spot.

Why waste time turning water into wine? Just have your local auto paint store make up a rattle can of the "correct" paint and start there.

I agree that getting the gloss paint from the auto paint store is the easiest way to solve the problem. Thanks to all for the replies.

Get a spray squeeze trigger to use on the can over the spray button. Your paint store should carry them. They make rattle cans much easier to use over longer times.

I would recommend testing both the original paint and the touch up paint to see if they are solvent sensitive. Otherwise you might end up with a real mess on your hands if you try painting over it with the wrong paint. If you’re lucky the paint underneath will be something catalyzed and you’ll be able to wash off the spray paint without hurting it. Test it in an inconspicuous area with lacquer thinner on a rag. I’ve seen way too many cases of someone using a spray can to “fix” an imperfection that could have easily been buffed out in the first place and making a horrible mess.
