Paint Question on Old T sheet metal

G’ day to all. Has anyone used any of this “rust preservative” paint on any old rusty Model T sheet metal. What I have read about it is that the metal can be coated with this paint and then “regular paint applied over it. I have some sheet metal that I would prefer not to sand / media blast because of it’s condition. Let me know the brand name that you used. Thanks in advance for the help, Thomas T

If you just want to protect it, get some spray cans of cold galvanizing primer. Its thin and will really run into all the nooks and crannys plus its full of zinc which will really help control rust. Paint right over it. ws

I have tried the POR15 on pretty rusty subframe on a pickup cab.It turns hard as a rock and seems to protect it and stiffen it pretty good to me.If you want to paint over it you have to do it before it completely dries or you will have to sand and recoat it and you won't be able to get into all the pits. Also there is no uv element so the sun will fade it out if left exposed.Word of warning if you try the stuff, it will NOT come off if you get it on you and dries. You will have to wait until your skin cells replace themselves...

We have been using SEM brand rust shield with pretty good success. You should give it a try. But make sure to let it dry before topcoating it.It is a 1k and actually dries not like a 2k that is catalized and "cures".

Hello again, originally I inquired about the use of Rust Preserver paints and received many good replies. I read up on several and choose Rust-Oleum’s Rust Reformer and the attached photo shows the 1922 Cowl with two coats applied. I used a 40-grit 4-1/2 flapper disc with my grinder before applying the paint and as you can see, it really came out smooth. I will apply some Evercoat Rage to fill in all of the small imperfections and then several coats of sanding primer and it should look new again. I am very satisfied the way it has turned out. Thanks fellows for the help and good advice, another old Model T piece saved.
