I have a really nice 1965 comet caliente , original wimbelton white paint acrylic lacquer paint . two small areas need touching up where the roof joins the body , the body shop told me they can do the repairs and repaint the given area 6" by 8" they are using two stage paint ,and guaranting a perfect match. Is it correct to use two stage paint ?

In my old fashioned opinion, no. I think your Comet came originally with acrylic enamel, rather than lacquer. I would have it repaired with acrylic enamel. It is harder to do a spot repair but very doable. But hey, if they guarantee to your standard it may be ok. I never liked a clear coat over a base that was not clear coated.

The clear coat in the one spot would look out of place with the rest of the car. Acrylic lacquer was used mostly for repairs and could be used over acrylic enamels but the stuff is getting harder to source. If there is paint fade, it's going to be difficult to match no matter what you choose. Single stage Concept PPG is what I would use if it is still available from PPG paint suppliers. It's an acrylic urethane but it can be rubbed with compound after it completely dries to get a similar conditional effect. If this is confined to the rear deck area with involvement to the sail panel area of the roof then you can do those panels separate from the rest and blend it in with the rest of the car. I had 64 T-bird in Wimbleton white and I used IMRON but it is no longer available now. I used clear on the whole car and later regretted it when the sun finally fogged over the clear coat and it started to peel off. If the car is garaged, the clear will last. If not, it won't.

The 2-stage would have to be rubbed to get a similar effect but I don't think it would give a perfect match unless the whole car was clear coated over after the 1st stage was rubbed out.
