Paint for Spare Wheel

I have had to purchase a new spare wheel for my survivor '28 Phaeton. The car has late 28/29 wheels but was only equipped with an AR spare when I bought it. I picked up a good wheel in red primer and am looking for advice about how to finish it, knowing that the wheel will rarely be on the road.

I'm advised that I should pull it down if I'm going to powder coat it, but wonder if I can use something else that doesn't require me to dismantle the wheel? I can't image that it will get much wear and tear on the paintwork sitting behind the car.

For the record, the rest of the paintwork on this car is more about patina than shine, but the other wheels probably have the most respectable (black) paintwork on the car. I'm thinking that a powder coated spare would be overkill on this style of car.

Buy a can of rattle can black, like Rustoleum. You're right that powdercoat wouldn't look right on an unrestored car.

I have a spare that I want to spray Straw yellow to match my other wheels on the car. Does anyone know a good or close match in a rattle can?

After having all my 19 inch spoke wheels sand blasted and coated with an epoxy primer, I loaded up my $17.00 Harbor Freight spray gun with Valspar original Green Apple epoxy paint and shot the wheels. Whatever it was, the paint went on without a hitch. An idiot can spray paint with that Valspar automotive paint. Cheap too compared to the others.

rust-oleum ultra cover-satin strawflower is what i use&very satisfied with results.home depot,special order.6 cans about $24.00 tom

If you decide to paint your wheel, here are some pictures of my "tool" I built to assist me in painting my wheels.
