Useing Rustoleum appliance black epoxey paint. Why is it you CANNOT touch up or give a second coat the nxt day,it will bubble up on the second coat and look terrible.Should i wait more time to do touch ups.Why does this do this. You can lay on a second coat up to about 15 min after first coat, but cannot do more coats like 24 hrs later w/o this bubbleing happening. Any definiate answers. ken ct.:(:(:(:(

Not an expert but ….. Its not a catalyzed product.
Further more epoxy will oxidize fairly quickly even in the shade….not the best choice.

It seems to work and hold up well on cast iron carb bases. Stays shinny and holds up good with todays gasahol. But cant recoat or spray over thin spots the nxt day even though seemingly dry.???? ken ct.

My experience says thinner in the paint acts on dry paint.but if paint is still (drying)it mixes with 1st coat and continues drying.FWIW.

Just boils down to the paint has not completely cured, and is still venting solvents, although imperceptible to the touch. As long as there are adequate solvents being vented, the finish will absorb the solvents from the new coat, and cause the prior coat to expand.

Thats what i think is the problem Russ, its still venting solvents even though it feels dry. How long must i wait to touch up days more or like weeks is unacceptable.I could wait a few days but not weeks.lol ken ct. Thanks for opinions all. I'll have to do some experimenting with a pc. of scrap metal i guess.

Hi Ken,
Have not ever tried it but how about heating the painted part in an oven on low heat. Would that speed up the venting? Try it on scrap.

Ken, have experienced that problem lately over and over, even tried using various primers, 90% percent of job comes out good, and then there is the bubbling sand it out reapply and to no avail still bubbling, thought maybe contaminants on that specific areas? but I agee I think it's because it's in a can and does not have a catalyst in it, I believe also causes paint not to hold up as long, will fade over time.

I have a Napa paint store in my state, CA and that is what he told me about rattle can paints, something with the law and spray can paints, pretty much like a base coat. I am know paint professional only what I have picked up here and there, and have never shot paint from a gun, where you can add the various product needed for it to be truly a professional type job.

Im going to try waiting longer before touchups like maybe a week and see if any diff. Ive had this trouble all along using this paint. Like yrs.I try to lay on a heavy a coat as i can w/o it running.and its ok as long as i dont respray nxt day. thanks ken ct.

A number of the rattle can manufacturers say to re-coat within 15 minutes or wait a week. I just finished an oil bath aircleaner using Duplicolor engine black. Took 3 weeks to get the final coat on it. Awesome results.

Ken I haven't had this problem on bases. A couple of years ago I had that problem on another project, though. It occured with other non-epoxy Rustoleum paint at the same time.

I had that problem with appliance epoxy by rustoleum, contacted them and they said 2 weeks before reapplying coats. Zeke

I'm with 296 v8.... Forget the rattle cans and buy your self a powder coating system through Eastwood. Then find your self an old house hold oven and powder coat them. Beautiful finish every time and no touch ups required.:D

What you describe is not a problem but instead the way the coating chemically dries. This is the way alkyd enamels (Dupont Dulux for example) worked when they were in common use refinishing cars. It essentially skins over and feels dry to the touch but things are happening below the surface that can't be disturbed. PATIENCE is the key to successful results with this paint or use another type.

Ken,
You might try a "tack coat", wait 5-15 minutes and respray, wait again and respray, multiple thin coats are better than 1 heavy coat as this lets the solvents flash off some without being trap under a "skin" which can make them take many days (weeks) to completely dry. I think you will find you have a better job and adhesion with this method.
Good Luck Paul J.

I may try that Paul,i cant wait a week or more for them to dry Thanks every one for your suggestions. ken ct. Will let know results doing flash coats.
