Packing needed for water pump nut w/seal?

Hi all,

I have one of the water pump nuts with the seal in the front. Everything else on the pump is original. Do I need to add packing behind it? Are these an improvement over the original nut?

Yes packing behind it!

And add some grease. The seal will guard against leaks by itself. You won't need packing until it starts to leak. Get your packing from a Model A Ford suppler.

Thanks for the info. I put the original style packing and lots of grease inside of the nut and lightly snugged it down. No leaks after the test drive!
