I have a new twist/theory on my oil coming out the dipstick hole problem. Sorry to make another post, but I'd appreciate input before I start tearing down the engine.

When I changed oil from what was in the crankcase and new oil before 1st startup, I put in 5 quarts of 40 weight dino oil. The dipstick at 5 quarts only read on the low mark, so I put another quart in..

I can see everyone shaking their heads. Now, stop it! I'm a new guy.

Anyhow, it's still reading between half and 3/4 full. I'm wondering if at least part of my problem is too much oil.

Next question, without draining, how would I get about 3/4 of a quart out?

You'll have to get oil on your hand and just remove the drain plug until you get a quart out.

Are you sure you had the dipstick all the way in? Sounds like you may have quit when one half of the dipstick caught on the edge of the hole. Did you squeeze the handle together so the dipstick went in all the way to the bottom of the loop?

I'm going to give a big DUH! on that one Tom. My only excuse is that that's the way it sat when I got it. :o Thanks, buddy!

Yea I did shake my head when I read this and as for getting to oil out with out draining, drive it it will leak out the rear main. Of course it will get over everything but you won't have to drain it.

I got about a quart out. With the dipstick in the right place it reads correctly. Once again, my embarassment knows no bounds.

I had a friend that went to town in his pickup. The truck was rusted out and the front fender fell of at an intersection. He said it would have embarrassed a normal person. He said he got out and put the fender in the box and continued on. I now use the expression,"that would have embarrassed a normal person" all the time and after I told some of my other friends they use it too. The friend died a few years ago and everytime I see an old rusted out pickup I think about him.

don't fel bad, it is a learning experience! have a laugh, at a new england meet on a tour to a personal collection just me and 25-30 model a people were getting ready to leave, opps miss elizabeth picked that time to not start , of course I was in the way of most of the party when else! Well they guys naver leave one behind {they couldn't get around me if they tried} Well sure i had flooded it as it turned over hood up checked for fuel OK no spark OH OH power to switch hmmmmmmm! avoice from the rear "TURN ON THE KEY" well low and behold Miss Elizabeth started up as I slowly slid into 1st gear and looked for a cliff to drive off...... I guess it is my nature to think the worst or most complicated of problems but in 5 years of fun all her "BREAKDOWNS" were simple easy little things that now bring a smile to my face, what a fun and simply simple vechile, It's so easy even I can do it! Have a laugh and drive on... bobbycoke

Speaking of overfill, when I worked at the car dealership in South Dakota a farmer came in and wanted the poor running engine fixed in his Dodge pickup. It shook like it had a 10 pound weight strapped on the flywheel. He said he got drunk the night before and pumped a bunch of oil into the crankcase, thinking he was filling his gas tank. I drained about 4 or 5 gallons of oil and the engine smoothed right out. I thought that was pretty funny and was glad to hear how it happened.

When my older brother was 16 he "Changed the oil" and could not understand why his 1952 Ford with automatic ****** would not move afterwards.
I went out, checked his oil which apparently had about eight quarts in the crankcase.
Needless to say, he had drained the auto trans and filled the crankcase.
I still bring it up over fifty years later, occasionally, when timely at family dinners.

I'm new to As too, but was told that it holds 5 qts only in a dry motor, 4 qts when changing in a wet motor. 4 qts brought mine to the full line when changing.
