Overdrive

You have it right.Lots of european cars used the Laycock.MG,Jaguar,Rover,Austin-Healy.I believe Volvo used the Laycock too. They were a different design than the BW.I've had a Healy 100-6 and a Healy 3000,they both had overdrives. Those operated with a toggle on the dash.

Laycock s great. Hide the switch and no one need know that you have O/D. Not levers or cables, just wires and easily wired so you cannot engage in reverse. (That will kill it) Many foreign makers used them, I had several in Austin Healy's with no problems even with 150 or more HP and driving like Bad Boy.

There are certain improvements to the A-Model that simply make it fully usable, without excuses today.

1) an overdrive
2) a big radiator
3) cast iron drums, and a re-bushed and adjusted braking system.

I have all three, and my can can go anywhere. What a difference. An A-Model can be improved here and there, without trashing it's original charm.

It is worth noting, that some engine improvements can make a nice difference, but they need not be done. It just depends on your driving habits.
