Overdrive Issue

My '54 Skyliner has overdrive but it is quirkey. When I first go someplace in the car the overdrive will kick in on request at a speed of about 30 to 40 MPH. However, as I drive longer and the car warms up it doesn't kick in at the low speed and I often have to get up to 50 to 60 MPH before it will kick in. Seems like engine time running and/or heat may be the problem but I'm stuck no knowing much about the overdrive on these cars.

Sometimes if the car sat unused for a while the OD will get sticky. I had one like that. I drained off the transmission. On an overdrive equiped car, it takes a while to drain. There are two fill holes, one on the transmission, and one on the OD unit. I filled the trans with 85/90, and the OD with ATF. After several miles, the OD never stuck again.

I noticed several people think this advice is bad. Let me say, fill the trans with 85/90, about a pint of ATF in the OD, then fill to capacity with 85/90. The oil in both parts will mix after a few miles. The ATF will cure the Sticky problem. My OD went many miles after this and was sold to another when I stepped up to a five speed.
