Over drive in our 46

John I did mine myself but I pulled the rear end out and rebuilt it. Just felt better putting all new bearings in and replacing seals. As far as spline count is concerned they will send you the right spline coupling for your car. I had to have them send me another one because apparently the 37 had 2 different spline counts. They are great people to deal with and will answer any questions you have. As far as cutting the rear pan on a stock car they told me only necessary up to 36. Mine clears the seat pan by about 1/4 in. They say 4hrs. but I would allow a day. As far as hints or problems it is a well designed product with no issues that I can remember.

Ok, you need to start a tech thread and give LOTS of details........and more/bigger pictures. :D

Thanks! I have a few more pictures from the install but most are from the lousy camera phone I had at the time.

Great use for a valve cover! Is the rear of your coupe lowered? If so, how much?
Contemplating a Mitchell for my '46 Tudor. Thanks

I took the spring apart and took 3 leafs out of it and added spring liner while it was out, but that's it. I wouldn't mind dropping the back some more but my 235/70/15's would definitely rub the fender with the reversed wheels if it came down in back.

Installation time?
Can one person do it or two? Things/hints to watch out for? How far back does the rearend have to be moved? What tooth count on a stock 46 pinion spline?
Thanks

John

I'd say you can do it in a weekend. It depends how involved you want to get. I degreased my axle and painted it while it was out, and also went over the rear spring, so that added to the time. I did it mostly myself but it was handy to have a helper in some spots, my dad was able to help me do some wrestling with it.

As for tips, if you're doing it without a lift like I was you'll need two hefty jackstands that go pretty high and a couple of extra wheels with no tires you don't mind scratching. Late model E or F series wheels are perfect. Get the back up in the air high, let the rear down on the bare wheels with no tires and you'll be able to roll it out on those spring and all without hitting the gas tank or bumper. It's pretty straightforward from there. I took the rear outside to gunk it and paint it. Much easier to assemble the mitchell without being under the car also.
