The rotating cover on top is a shutter to be closed when you want heat and open otherwise. If you couple the opening in the firewall to the heater with a short piece of metal tubing (I've used a soup can cut lengthwise to good effect: it springs out to the right size) and close the shutter on top of the heater you will be mightily pleased with the amount of heat it puts out. When heat is not desired, blank off the firewall and open the shutter on top of the heater. This allows some air flow through the heater, keeping the exhaust manifold temperature down and thereby treating your condenser more gently (which can suffer from excess heat). The shutter on the Otwell heater is a pretty cool idea (no pun intended).
