Original roadster @ convention

Steve Ciccalone .............................
I have three different HENDERSON original real photo postcards pictured here. I have a studio, cabinet photo of one somewhere. I can't find it right off. It might be up in W. Va. It is super quality and larger. I'll have to get it to you later.
I thought that I would let everybody see these.
MIKE :)

Mike I know we're getting off topic and people are probably going to ***** but the two long skinny Hens are 1914 models, 66" wheelbase. The top center photo is a '16 with the "short" 58" wheelbase. The hen in front of the shop is flanked by two Indians, a twin and single cylinder, single speed bikes. I'm guessing they are '13 or 14 low end models as they have rigid frames. In '13 Indian top of the line models had a cradle frame rear suspension that was carried through until 1922. Rigid frames were also used for export models. Great photos, thanks for sharing. The guys on the AMCA web forum would like to see these.

Hi.
What is a car like this worth? My friend just picked up a 30 roadster needing about the same amount of work to do a complete restorating.
His car is not as original as this car is because it has been repainted and has a B block motor. The body and fenders have no rust thru and the fenders have never needed splits welded. The bumpers still have good chrome. The only origenal parts missing are shocks, shock arms and links. It runs and drives and he paid somthing less than $10,000. The top is in better condition but was replaced 8 or 10 years ago. Do not know if this was a good or bad buy. I am interested in your throughts

Here is an unretored 29 roadster, that was found recently near San Diego, great patina, it runs and drives. It's for sale if you are interested please send me an email at a34fordman@verizon.net

John W., Houston, Texas,

John, there is a saying "that it is ALL in the details". I think your friend's car falls into this category. There are SO many little details that you look at to tell if it has been "molested" or messed with over the years. What I feel affects the value of a car like your friend's car is knowing about those details and verifying they are indeed original, --and not a 1950's era replacement. Being a skeptic by nature, when you say the engine is a 'B', and shocks/hardware are missing, etc., I start wondering if the engine pans are still there, if the radiator is original, is the terminal box complete, are the bolts original or did they substitute fasteners when they did the swap. You mentioned the top has been changed, is the tack strip the correct one or did they exchange it for wood? How about the top hardware? Often times to the unversed, these items might really look similar ...however unauthentic.

By you saying that your friend paid less than $10k, I guess he is happy with his price and that is what truly matters. Based on your knowledge of the car, do you feel he got a bargain or paid top-dollar?

(I might add that a car that runs & drives is of no consequence to me because the babbitt could be worn out and the crankshaft turned .040 undersized. Since it has a 'B' block, it also could be full of cracks internally placing the value of this engine at almost nothing. Just my opinion though.)

I forgot to mention. That last photo is a military photo and penciled on the back is: "FORT SHAFTEN - HONOLULU, HAWAII".
I did not realize that HENDERSON supplied m/cs to the military.

Hi Josh, some people would call it high dollar WD40. It does four things, it cleans, lubricates, inhibits (kills) rust and protects the surface from further corrosion. Its well worth its price. It doesn't harm original paint and when it kills the rust, it brings up paint not previously visible. I'm not a dealer, just an addicted user. I'm posting a photo of a line up of four original paint mc's, three Hendersons and a '39 Indian. All have Gibbs on them now. The bike in the foreground, a '26 Hen, was in a damp basement from 1929 to 1984. The roadster in the background is A189.:)

Its a 30 Standard Roadster; the windshield and top bows are the are the giveaway. You can also see the welting seam in the runningboard shield. Doesn't appear to have the usual rust out in the bottom of the cowl. It also appears to be an early 30 as the cowl band doesn't extend below the lower bead; probable the cowl band is held in place with studs in the cowl band.

What a neat vehicle, shouldn't be restored, just cleaned up.

I agree an unrestored vehicle makes such a great reference it's a shame to lose them. You got them reversed Ron. The early does extend to the bottom of the bead, the late does not.

What is Gibbs? thanks josh

Gibbs is the greatest thing since sliced bread! In addition to all of the great qualities that Steve noted it also does wonders for porcelain license plates. Not only does it protect but it brings out the gloss nicely. Now if I could only find another local source for it because nobody around here carries it anymore.

Back to the original topic, I seem to recall an unrestored standard roadster for sale on fleaBay a year or two back, possibly somewhere in the northeast. Does anybody know if this is the same car?

Hope to see them this fall Steve!

Here is another '30 roadster 'unrestored'. Very early '30 Canadian, notice '29 style bumpers & it has 'eyebrow' front fenders.
It was at 2007 MAFCA Meet, Christchurch, New Zealand. It ran, a bit noisy in timing gear & the water pump a'drippin', but it drew a lot of attention. Was going to be left 'as is' & certainly appeared to be mostly original.

Steve Ciccalone .....................
I did not realize that the m/cs with the "X" in the logo were HENDERSONS. I have many photos of them. I'll look to see if I have any 4 cyls.
MIKE :)

Hi guy's,

Maybe It's me,,What's the deal with a original car that look's like crap and need's to be "Restored" ? I can see if one want's to see how they were from the factory...take some picture's and go from there...

Transferring this logic to my modern car which is in need of a paint job and look's like crap...I guess I can say it's original !!!! BTW is this what's called "Shabby Shiek" ????..

To me it's a "old A that need's fixing up ? Please enlighting me ??

Greg out West,

Greg way out West .................
It is only, real, once ! After that, it's only a copy.
There are not too many "real" ones left.
MIKE :)

Steve Ciccalone ........................
Is this first m/c photo, of a HENDERSON ?
And, is this the same sign that you have ?
The rest of my m/c photos with an "X" on the tank are EXCELSIOR. I have a bunch of them !
I also have a '29 "A" roadster, just like yours. You can see it on page 63, in the 3rd page as #53 in the "A" Section. It is under "Let's See Before and After Pictures". When I restored it, the thing to do, was to "deluxe" them up. Plus, I found a pair of welled fenders, cheap.
I promise to not post any more motorcycle "stuff" here. But, it was a continuance of our conversation.
MIKE :)
