Ordering Ross Pistons

The last time I ordered Ross Pistons, they came from Red's Headers and well, that's not happening now. Pistons & rings are about the only things missing from my collection of "next engine" parts. I'll be looking for pistons of an as of yet undecided oversize along with metric ring set. I seem to recall that someone here got the needed part numbers and such from Ross and then ordered them from Summit Racing, does this sound familiar with anyone? Comments & advice welcome! Thanks.

Just call Ross pistons directly. You can talk to a person who knows what they are talking about. Any pistons I need have been purchased from Ross directly I always work with Chris he always helps with what ever it is needed. Ross pistons are in everyone of my engine's that includes the pistons we use in all of our record setting Ford flathead blocks that have set numerous land speed records.

Yeah, I've always just emailed them, found them most helpful, and I'm in New Zealand

I'm with Ronnie and Brian, I just call them directly, discuss ring availability and sizes, discuss custom bore sizes, discuss custom compression heights, etc.. I always measure my deck/compression-height with the crankshaft I'm going to use and a rod installed in each bank. This enables me to determine the "lowest" bank and calculate my final compression height to get the piston dome where I need it. Also, I never order pistons until I am sure the bores are good for whatever size I believe I need . . . sometimes I order specific bore diameters to match metric ring availability.

You can do ALL these things with Ross . . . then place the order via Summit.

Be aware that Ross is currently in the process of moving thier manufacturing from SoCal to Michigan. I understand they will maintian a salles office in California going forward.

This. Make sure you ask which bore size is available with metric ring packs. In my opinion, it doesn't make sense to be still be using cast rings in this day and age if you are starting fresh.

A re-ring, I get it, but metric rings are the way to go for sure with a fresh build.

THIS is why I posted but the question remains, what is the benefit of using Summit?

Shoebox - Summit pays the shipping, same cost as quoted by the supplier. Call Summit with the specs / part numbers from Ross. I've sourced tires with Summit, ships direct to the tire shop, no freight charge.

I dunno. I would still go through Ross directly. When spending $500-$800, I would rather be able to call who I bought them from rather than a reseller. That to me isn't worth free shipping.

Case in point, Ross sent me the wrong rings when I ordered my custom pistons. They were great about it. Sent me a label to send the rings back and then overnighted the corrected rings.

I understand it was their mistake, but I seriously doubt Summit would do that. Plus, they would need to contact Ross, causing further delay.

Sometimes you can completely spec the design with Ross and then order via Summit. You'll get a good price, shipping is usually free, etc.. Talk to Ross and ask them the best way to buy/order what you want. Sometimes you need to go direct, but if you don't have a lot of custom features, then you can go through Summit.

A sort of update FWIW, I called Ross Pistons the other day and per Ronnieroadster's recommendation I asked for Chris,..nice guy! I explained I'm not a machinist, that discussing fractions, decimals and millimeters in the same sentence make me woozy. I mentioned that the most most oversize I'd consider was 3-5/16 and probably least 3-3/16+.060, and the final choice would probably be dictated by metric ring set availability. He rattled off some millimeter info which sailed over my head, but said I should be able to get something in that range. We're going to talk again when they complete their move to Michigan. So, we'll see how things go.
