opinion in this pinion ..

There may have been a process missed during the manufacture of that duplex cup assembly. They may have originally ground them to a spec and then applied another process such as machine lapping to smooth them out further. I checked a bunch of large Timken cups that I have for main rotor transmissions and they have smoother surfaces with very fine machine markings flowing around the inner circumference of the race surface (radially). No lines at all from the inside to the outside (axially). That old duplex cup assembly in the photo looks like it was machine ground but not completely finished.

Timken has proprietary processes for manufacturing these tapered rollers but I have no idea what the processes are for sure. It would be interesting to know though.

I think that's what it is , it's just missed a final stage in manufacture. I did send the pictures to Timken USA via Facebook , so I'll see what they say.

Fred ask me to post these photos for him.

"here are pictures of what I sell. could there be a bad one that got thru it would be a first.thanks jseery for doing this. Fred"

I have bought numerous NOS parts from Fred. He is great guy to deal with and thank god he has good old NOS USA parts. Other wise we would be stuck with a lot imported junk.

Looks like a bad one slipped thru. The pics of the others look right.

I agree. With the grease or grease like coating on the bearing surface shown in picture #2, it would be difficult to tell what the finish is like before shipping this part. Even with the best QC in place, it is possible for a bad part to occasionally slip through.

The military stuff is usually coated in par-al-keytone or cosmoline so it does take a bit to uncover. Sometimes they even sealed stuff inside tin cans. It just depends on the contract.

I did get a reply from Timken USA via face book.
The Timken Company It looks like a very bad grind job. Certainly not an acceptable finish for a bearing.

Anyone heard from Fred I emailed him several days ago?

He sent me the photos I posted, that's it. He was slow responding to my emails on the photos, so he may not check email very often.
