One Last Question: Anti-Freeze

I am in the Tampa area. I recently bought a Wisconsin 30 Tudor and it has a Prestone mixture in it. It looks like there is no good reason I shouldn't drain it. Any suggestions on just distilled water with a rust inhibitor. What about Water Wetter?

Brian,

Have you driven the car with what coolent (Prestone, ?) is already in it?
Does it foam up, over flow, etc.? Maybe your "A" likes the Prestone. If
not, yeah distilled water and a rust inhibitor would be fine. That is what
I'm putting in my '29 "A". In fact today I'm planning on going to the local
NAPA store here in Dade City, FL, and seeing what they have in inhibitors
that are paint friendly. I'll post what I find later today.:)

Oops! As far as the Water Wetter goes, I have heard pro and con about it. I've got some but have yet to use it. My feeling is if you have to use it, you are just masking a bigger problem. That could only get worst if you don't correct it the right way.

Thank's Bob. Yeah, the Prestone was in the radiator when I received the car. I haven't driven it that much yet and it hasn't foamed up or overflowed but it does tend to overheat. I think I'll go with distilled water and an inhibitor. I have a bottle of Water Wetter but I don't think I'll use it. I'm thinking the same way you are regarding that. Any idea about a paint friendly rust inhibitor?

Brian G,

I picked up a container of Mac's 1300 (a NAPA brand) radiator anit-rust
solution from the local NAPA store. The clerk was honest when I asked him about whether the stuff is paint friendly or not and he said he really didn't know. There is nothing on either the front or back labels of the rust preventive stating whether it is detrimental to paint or not. It does offer the usual precautions concerning eye and skin contact. Like anything it is best removed from paint as soon as possible. I'm going to run it in my car.

If you are having an over heating problem with your car. I would suggest
that you thoroughly flush the coolent system before you add any different
coolent or additives. Do a "search" here on the FordBarn on how do to this for the best effect. There have been many threads on the subject
and I'm sure you will find one best suited for your situation.

I hope I have been of some help and keep us informed on what you do
and how it turns out.

Bob,
Thank's for the info on the rust inhibitor. I'll check with a couple part supply places here to see if I can add anything to the puzzle. Will let you know.
Brian

I add a capfull or two of cutting oil to the water(yes it turns the water white), anti rust, waterpump friendly, bearing friendly, paint friendly, leak prof, is a coolent, has that enginering shop smell, ie- has very little risk. Unfortunatly it may not be the best anti freeze but will be better than none

Bob A, That Mac's 1300 may be the same as the old Mac's 13 which has been around a looooong time & was widely accepted as GOOD stuff.
