On the road now

My 1929 Tudor passed its MOT (government safety test) today and is now properly and legally registered for use on the roads.

I did get two advisories. An advisory is something picked up and is not bad enough to fail a test but should be looked at before the next test in a years time.

These advisories were about both rear wheel bearings.

With the car jacked up, and grabbing the wheel at the top and the bottom and rocking the wheel towards the centre of the car, there appears to be about 1/16" play. The question: Is this normal, or if not, what is likely to be at fault, bearing or hub?

Thanks

Roly

Hello Roly,
I would be inclined to make sure the axle shaft nuts are tight, I can see that a hub or roller bearing would be able to be moved up and down if worn, not rock like a loose front wheel bearing, was this a independent or county run station ?.

Thank you Brian. you were bang on the mark.
I would guess the axle nuts were tightened up to about 25 ft-lb rather than 125 ft-lb. I got about a turn more on the nuts.

I guess I WILL now need a puller if I want to take the hubs off!

All our testing stations are independant, but they have to logon to a government site while doing the test.

Cheers

Hello Roly
I don't think 1/16 " sounds like much you could have some wear in the bearings and
axle housing .But more likely a M.O.T man who does not deal with old cars very often

You could ask John Buckley who is on this site he is in the English Model A Club and does a great deal of touring around the world in his Model A
Good Luck

MOT chap well experienced with vintage cars, he also runs a classic and vintage motor cycel business. As you may have now gathered its was indeed loose axle shaft nuts.

Thanks for your input.

Roly,
I would check them again in 500 to a 1000 miles to be sure there is no more movement, if there is then you may need to check the shafts and hubs for wear, nice to hear that you have a honest test station.
Brian.
