Hey Jim, was your Merc parked outside a gift shop in Tok back in mid June? We were vacating in a rental motor home on our way to Chicken and Dawson City when I spotted it and snapped this.

Grandadeo, no that is not my car. got to be its twin other than the wheels, I have never seen that car before. I would like to know who owns it, mine has personalized plates that read 51MERC. now you got me curious as to who owns the car. thanks for the picture of it. wish you had let me know you were in state, we could have got together and showed you a few cars one of our big get togethers is on the 21'st of june every year, if the weather is good usually at least 100 cars. this is just outside of anchorage near Eagle river.

This was my fully imported Factory Right Hand Drive 1951 Mercury Sport Sedan. Just wish that I still owned it. I made a mistake in selling this beauty. It was one of a reported six 1951 Mercury Sport Sedans that were imported into Australia when new.

Here are some interior shots of my 1951 Mercury. You will notice that it has the 1949 Mercury Dash fitted. Ford Motor Company decided to use the carry over 1949 Mercury Dash, as the expense of tooling up the restyled dash for 1950 with so few sales was not worth it. On a similar basis, all RHD 1941 through 1948 Fords and Mercurys used their respective 1941 Dashes on Right Hand Drive models. So, this Dash is correct for an original RHD 1951 Mercury. A similar thing happened in the USA on the 1949 - 1951 Ford and Mercury Woodys, as all three years used the original 1949 Dash, as the cost of tooling up for the redesigned units was just too prohibitive for so few sales.

Thanks for sharing the pictures. my brother has a 1951 Mercury woody, and it has the correct 1951 dash in it, not the 49 style. it is the original dash to the car. nice looking car.

Hi Jim, That is very unusual about the 51 Mercury Woody having the correct 51 Mercury Dash. I have never seen a Mercury Woody, but was assuming that the Mercury Woodys would have the earlier Dash, as the similar model Ford Woodys never got the updated Dash? As you know, the Dash on the Woodys is narrower than the one fitted to the Woodys. That is why Ford had to make a complete new narrower Dash for the 49-51 Woodys.

Here is a picture of another Factory RHD 1951 Mercury Sport Sedan that now calls australia home. It is believed that this Mercury originally came from new Zealand. It has the Spare Wheel mounted on the rear. These are great looking cars. As I mentioned earlier, I wish that I still had mine.

Thank you Sal. I appreciate it. I cannot take credit for the build though. I bought the car as a 90% finished project out of New York, where that fellow had bought it as an advertised turn key car. well, it wasn't and when the guy in New York got it , it was not what he wanted and it went up for sale in 2 weeks after he purchased it. I chased this car from Georgia to New York hoping to buy it over a period of 2 months. I think the car originally came out of California as an unfinished project, but am not sure. as you look at the car it is very well done, but you can see evidence of 3 different levels of workmanship, indicating the car was passed around in project form. it was a fresh build with only 4 miles showing on the odometer. everything in the car has been rebuilt or new, however not everything works and functions correctly, but with a new build this is to be expected. I have about a little over 300 miles on it now and am working out the bugs. car has a 36 dash and gauges a 40 repro wheel 36 wide 5 wheels just to name a few things most everything including the frame is powder coated. Thanks for the compliment on the car. I may need some help and suggestions on the carburation in the future.. Jim

Thanks for all the info about the car Jim. The tri-power fits the car and the era.
How does it work for you ?

Sal

Actually right now it is only running on the center carb. I did not want to wash the rings out on a new rebuild before the eng. is broke in. I have been fighting an intermittent miss, and think that is cured now. I did not want to introduce more than one problem at a time. the linkage is not progressive and I think I am going to try it that way. I did take the carbs apart as it was initially to lean had 51 jets in all three carbs. I changed the center carb to 56 jets for now, still may be a bit lean. no power valves in the end carbs, they are plugged. not sure what the power valve is in the center carb. it works ok for now. I am a bit embarrassed to say that they are not all three working. may not get to it this year. our driving season is almost over. I may need your advice on the carbs at a later date.-----Jim
