Ol' Ron and cam thrust

I caught this comment from you from an earlier thread: "Time to start checking this "Stuff". Don't forget to check cam end play, I have a stock 8bA on the stand with .022" end play. Have to put a shim behind the distributor gear."

So what are your insights on cam thrust on the 8BA? How much? How little? Where to measure from? Impact? Means to adjust? I'd always figured it was at the mercy of the new gear and the least worn cover possible. I appreciate your input!!

I made a new, thinner gasket to reduce cam end thrust... Taking the gasket out and using silicone was also a consideration, but writing paper made it right... I don't remember where I found an end play spec...

I think the end play is .004-.006", most run around .010-014" this is when I don't run any gasket. End play on the 8BA can cause some ign adv changes, but I don't thing it would affect operation or performance. Maybe someone could measure it.
Many years ago I saw a cracked aluminum cover from cam thrust into the cover and that's why I use early cam and crank gears.

Good to know. Thanks guys! Between this info and a prior thread about all versions of the 8BA timing covers, iron ones ain't pretty but looking better all the time.
