Oil usage

I have a 41SuperDeluxe with a 90 hp 8 cylinder. The engine was just rebuilt and it drips oil. I'm told its from the slinger and normal. Is it and how much oil use age is normal?

Well you had to ask! After teaching for Lincoln Tech a few years i watched the same Ford film on oil usuage many, many times so here goes :


One quart = 39,500 drops ( a drop of sae spec oil is xx x xx etc )

So a typical engine ( 60-70s) uses 1/1100 of a drop every power stroke and equals a 1 quart every 1000 miles.
However a leak of one drop every 50 feet would equal a quart in 400 miles.

shows that a leak is worse than a burn..........

1950 rebuilt 8ba flathead 1 qt 2000 miles, 8000 miles on rebuild
2009 Hyundai 85,000 miles less than 1 qt /7500 miles between oil change
1996 Camry 280,000 miles 1 qt /400miles

Well, mine with a labrynthe and rope seal doesn't leak OR burn 5w-20......
