what oil do you guys recamend for a stock A. havent changed it yet but have been topping it off w/ 30w non-detergant. also rear end and ******. thanks.

The search button will bring you enough information here that you will be just as confused after reading that as you will be when this thread winds down. I personally use Shell Rotella 10-40 oil manufactured for diesel engines because of the zinc additive. It is a detergent oil and that is what I feel is best. No matter which oil you do choose, the most important thing IMHO is to change the oil annually or every 1,500 miles, ...whichever comes first.

With regard to the rear end & transmission, originally the lube was 600W. Vendors generally sell this in quart bottles.

LOL, boy have you started a 100 post string, not knowing how long its been since your engine has been worked on or desludged its hard to recomend an oil, mine has 5000 miles on it and it was hotanked before being rebuilt, i use 20-50 detergent, the one that does not say for gasoline engines on the front in a red circle, that oil is for roller tappet engines, i use straight 140 weight gear oil in trans and third member, i get it at my local truck service facility

Wow, this is rare, but i use the same oil as Brent and change at the same mileage on three of my A engines. And 600 in the trans. and rear.

I use shell Rotella 10-40 as well, had been changing every 1000 miles or so but will move to 1500 miles. If its good enough for Brent its good enough for me, beside if my engines blows maybe I can shame him into a cheap rebuild:)

Coming to you live from snowy WV

I use Valvoline Racing Oil 40W. It has the Zinc additives needed for flat tappet cam engines. Very important:eek:. Also, good idea to use a thermostat to keep that engine hot to prevent sludge build up in the engine.

Joe,,,, confused yet:confused:.

Use non detergent oil if you want to build up an inch of sludge in your engine and plug up the oil passages.

The slippery kind!

Just about any oil today beats any oil made then. You will find someone that swears on just about each and every brand and weight of oil.

Yau got that right Mike.Personally i use Castrol 20-50 or valvoline 20-50. You will get 20 diff answers to your ques. OMO ken ct.
