Oil slinger

Should the 292, 312 Y block engines have an oil slinger at the front of the crankshaft?
Some diagrams show a slinger and others do not. I had one in my engine and it crapped out causing should damage. If the slinger is required, who supplies them. Thanks very much

Most manufacturers used them at one time, most don't anymore. They were primarily designed to reduce the oil around the timing cover seal to slow down leakage. Modern seals do a much better job of sealing so slingers weren't a necessity anymore. Some guys believe the centrifugal force of the slinger helped spray the oil back onto the timing chain or gears, maybe...
For what it's worth, I have built several Y blocks and many small blocks without slingers and had no problems or leaky seals

I would advise to use the slinger if you have no way of aligning your crankshaft to the timing cover. Ford always used a special tool to mimic the crankshaft dampener pulley aligning your timing cover/front seal with the crank dampener itself.

The slingers are so plentiful and cheap insurance,,,, Y not lol
