oil shields

Are the oil shields next to the main bearings the same? I've opened up a later transmission that does not have one at the rear bearing.

Many modern replacement bearings for this application are "sealed" and don't require the oil shield. They have all the lubricant (and an optimal lubricant) they need installed at assembly at the factory.

I tend to install the shields anyway simply on the basis of "constraining" the bearing to front-back movement - but for these bearings shields serve no purpose other than constraint.
