Oil Seal in a 32 ******?

I have a 32 ****** out of a V8 32 Ford. In a Chassis Repair Manual I have it shows an exploded view of this transmission. It does not show an oil seal anywhere, front or back. However the Green Bible lists a part #78-7052 which is called an oil seal(trans main drive gear bearing retainer) for 32 to 42 trannys. I have my ****** out of the car, and can't spot an oil seal anywhere. What gives here?

The front bearing retainer/collar for throwout contains a tiny cork ring that was discontinued in the early thirties. Yours may just be dust by now.
You can replace your retainer with a 78 one, marked with that number, used from 1937 onward, and with that piece use the 78 seal. The rear gets no seal. Henry relied on gravity and the honor system to keep the oil where it belonged.
The puzzling catalog reference is to this use as a retrofitted part.

There is a seal that keeps the oil in the trans, it's in the drive shaft tube... Not so easy to replace- some one (not me) will know- I think it goes in to the front of the tube... Karl

I also use the 78- front bearing retainer with a seal.

I also use a Sealed Bearing for the rear main shaft bearing. (P/N 6208-2RS-NR). I remove the inner seal (transmission side) so it can get lubrication. Some people leave the inner seal in place as the bearing is packed at the factory and will last as long as most of us will ever have the car. If you do remove the inner seal, do not wash out the lubricant, just leave it. It will get along just fine with the transmission oil.

I use the regular rear bearing shield. Pay close attention to getting the counter shaft and reverse idler shafts sealed up well where they go thru the case and you should wind up wiith a trans that does not leak.

I have been doing this for years with very good results.

I hope this helps.

Bruce L:
Could I get by by simply forgetting about the seal altogether?

I have one of the 78-7052 seals, but I'm really unsure as to where it goes. The Green Bible shows it (for a 38-39 passenger ******),in front of the small snap ring no.7064 (see page 291 of the Bible). Is it simply slid onto the main shaft in front of that snap ring? I appreciate the info you have given so far, and will appreciate even more further clarification.

You also need a 78-7050 Front Bearing retainer. It will have provisions for the seal. These are very common. If you can not find one, let me know, I am sure I have some extras. You can also use a sealed front bearing simular to the rear one I posted a comment about previously. (The P/N is 6306-2RS-NR).

I hope this helps,

Right, get a 78 retainer. They are marked and are on all transwmissions 1937-48 and various later Mercs and pickups. The original cork ring is probably close to nothing, and if I remember right Ford discontinued it as a service part BEFORE the 78 parts came out, so no seal would likely work up there if you like risking a lot of work and maybe your clutch...not a good idea, though. Proper fix shouldn't exceed ten bucks.
