I have the oil pan off my '36 pickup, a 221ci babitt-bearing engine. It has the very old style long body oil pump, the kind with a filter screen inside the body of the pump (missing on mine), no relief valve on the pump, and a long pickup that drops into a small circular reservoir on the bottom of the pan. The drive gears are helical-cut. It has some wear, and I'd like to replace this with a new #50 (short body)pump. Alll of the ones that I see from the usual suspects have a relief valve built into the pump body. My relief valve is at the front of the intake valley; I checked it when I had the intake manifold off, replaced the spring, cleaned it, etc.
Do I keep both relief valves? Plug the one on the new pump?
Also, the pickup on the new pump has a screen built in, it looks like it would interfere with the little reservoir at the bottom of the pan; do I just cut that off?
Thanks for any guidance,
Adam
