Oil pump questions

I have one oil pump with a rectangular outlet hole and one with a round outlet hole. Which one should I use? What wears out in the oil pump? Should I use the two gaskets that go in the pump? What do they do?
 
Thanks Milton. That's almost too much information but I plan to read it all tomorrow morning with my second cup of coffee. I never knew anything about oil pumps but you have peaked my interest and possibly saved my engine.

Thanks for the posting Milton. Great ! Information on the pumps that I have been looking for in many service maor the rest ofnuals to no avail. Should keep me busy for the rest of the morning reading.
