Oil Pump Question

Here's a question for all of ya; when I was changing my oil, I put my finger into the hole to clear out any sludge and I noticed that I could move the bottom part of my oil pump (the screen part) about an inch side to side. Is it normal for it to have a little play in it or do I need to drop the pan and tighten it up? Thanks

Personally, I've never seen one you could move that much. Since maintaining oil flow is so vital, I'd be very tempted to find out what's wrong. JMO Good luck.

take a look at a chassis book such as the green book p.274. It should show the screen and the cup it fits into, as well as the wire retainer for the screen to the cup and the arm for the pick-up. The screen should not be moving 1" side to side unless something is loose such as the arm holding the pick up to the pump. If that is the case your oil pressure will be very low. If the screen is moving up and down 1" it is possible the wire retainer has come off and allowed the screen to drop. If so check your oil pressure with a oil gauge screwed into the block and see if your developing proper oil pressures, if so let it go. If not drop the pan. make sure just the screen is moving and not the cup it fits into.

It sounds like the tube that come out and holds the round part the screen is in is broke loose at the weld. It is welded to a small flange that bolts to the pump. I had the same thing 4 or 5 years ago and pulled the pan and brazed it. You are sucking air and if it drops there will be no oil pressure. G.M.

Id bet the cup w screen have come loose from the tube = at low oil level you could loose oil presser.
Id drop the pan and fix it ….. Obviously much cheaper than a rebuild

Here is what you have. This is from my '46. The side to side play of the screen is about 1/8 of an inch in mine. Looks like you need to drop the pan on this one. Ed
