motor i'm installing in my doodlebug.on side of motor,i guess holding oilpump in place is a setup like dist screw head with locknut,i am reading when pan comes off the pump will fall off, how can it with this setup unless it doesnt go far enough to hold pump or is this not right

The thread size you need is a 1/8 pipe plug with a hole drilled through the center , then tap with 10/32. You will thread a 10/32 screw long enough to contact the oil pumpbody to hold it in place. No 7 drill for 10/32.

Oil gallery access hole (side of block and below carb) was originally plugged with as simple brass or steel NPT plug. What you describe, someone has removed the plug and replaced with lock similar to distributor set screw? If I'm understanding correctly, the screw and lock nut should hold the oil pump in place. One way to find out is drop the pan and see what happens.

Oil pump is driven by an intermediate shaft, the same intermediate shaft drives the distributor. Both pump and dizz slide out of intermediate shaft, intermediate shaft is held in by a spring. If you would remove the valve chamber cover, you would see how all this works

The suppliers have a gizmo that holds the oil pump in place when you drop the pan, or install the pump. Snyder's part #A6621R. 6 bucks and well worth it.

Ditto what Dollar Bill said. Sounds like you already have the "gizmo" installed that keeps the oil pump from dropping. To run the engine you will need to replace it with the retaining plug (see A-6755 from Bert's for example). - JimCarl

If you dont have the tool it is very easy to hold the oil pump in place when refitting the oilpan. Thread a cable tie through the nearest oilpan bolt hole then around the back of the pump neck then through the next hole . Pull the cable tie tight and this will hold the pump in place .When the pan is nearly home cut the tie and pull it free.
