Oil Pump Question

I have two new(but both 40 yrs old) oil pumps; both stamped "8ba 6604". They are helical gears. Which pressure spring would they carry----50 or 80 lbs? I think they both were for pickup use.

In my experience ANY oil pump needs to be tested before installing on the engine. The bypass valve can be adjusted with a spacer on the spring to get any oil pressure you want. I remove the drive gear, insert a tight plastic sleeve with a pressure gauge and adjustable bypass over the two diameters in the center of the pump. Run the pump with a half inch drill in the direction of drilling a hole. Put the pump pick up in a quart of oil and recirculate the oil back into the pan adjusting the return flow for back pressure. G.M.

Yes, I always test pumps before using them. My system clamps to the gear so it is not necessary to remove anything to perform a test.

To answer your original question, without the added commercial, it is my experience that cold oil pressure, with the stock 8BA pump, is set at 52 to 56 pounds in the "as received" condition.
