Oil pump knock?

Spent the sunny afternoon today lying underneath my 1930 Tudor, listening to a fast knocking sound coming from my oil pan. Sounds is as if you put a nut into a metal can and shake it, or like a defective ball bearing would (except there is not supposed to be any ball bearings in there, of course) Holding my doctor wife's stetoscope to the oil pan bottom, the sound is clearly loudest just under the oil pump, that is in the drain plug area. Any ideas what to expect? May the oil pump make such a knocking?

Hope the wife does not need that stethoscope anymore. Sorry I do not have any constructive ideas. I have had similar noises but they seem to go away after the engine warms up after a few minutes. Does yours go away? Do you have adjustable valve lifters? Maybe the lifters need adjustment. Others on the Barn I am sure may have better ideas.

I think you have to drop the pan and check the oil pump and bearings.
Something isn't right, and it can only get worse.

Noises can travel and be easily deflected. Would it not be a timing gear knock?

Center main. Better drop the pan and check it. The main knock is transferred to the pump and sounds loudest there because that is where it contacts the pan through the tension spring.
