Oil pressure relieve spring

I think someone put the length of these springs on here once. I have a 34 engine and a 58AB engine tore down right now. I kind of got the 2 springs mixed up. One is kind of a weak spring (small wire size) 1.810 lenght. The other is heavyer spring (bigger wire size) 2.000 long. I'm bretty sure the weaker one is the 34. I'm useing the stock 34 oil pump in the 34, it's just like new. Does that sound right to you guys in the know? Thanks Walt

Walt, I am not in the know as much as you and the other engine gurus on here. I have built a couple 21 studders and a 59ab. The 21 stud engines had a lighter/lower force spring as compared to the 59.

Walt the shims I installed in several pumps and front relief valves were about 3/16" or .180, your 34 spring is .190 shorter then the later spring. I wonder if the 34 shrunk from getting weak. I would use the heavy longer spring in all of these engines. You can test the springs and old pressure spinning the engine with 12 volts before you put the intake manifold on and know what the pressure will be when the engine runs. G.M.

Thanks John, I thought the light one was for the 34, I just never happen to have 2 of them in my hand the same time. Hey Paul, some times I'm in the know but I cain't think of it. LOL Walt

Hi GM. Your right, the 34 spring is very weak compared to the 59AB spring. I don't like it. Of course the 34 pump is about like a Model A, I think the same gears. I'll make sure it has pressure before the engine leaves. Had a new main babbitt job done on this engine. I want to make sure I have good oil pressure these new bearings. Walt

Walt I posted before how to test the pump with a 1/2" drill. The old pump like you have will pump 90 lbs pressure if the gears are good and the clearance of the bottom plate is close. G.M.
