Oil pan

I have pulled my oil pan and am now trying to put it back on and have noticed that there is a rubber gasket that seems to block the rope gasket when I went to put the pan back on, has anyone had this happen before? My great uncle that helped my grandfather work on the car years ago seemed to think he changed it and now does not use the rope gasket anymore. Also when we pulled the pan we could not find any remnants of a previous rope gasket.

Perhaps it had a modern type lip seal installed. If that is the case,I would cut the old seal & pull it out or you would have to remove crank pulley & front cover to get it off.I ve never had any problem with the rope type seal. Some so called*modern*improvements are not always the best in my opinion.

Seems that way. There have been many posts about the failure of the modern seal. My own car has them in the front and rear and it leaks from both real bad.
