Oil Pan

Is it possible to remove the oil pan/bell housing from a 239 while it is in the car, A 1947 Mercury coupe?

It is possible. However, and speaking from a ton of personal experience, it's easier to remove the engine.

You have to raise the front of the engine. and make sure the crank throws are not in the way. A real pain in the ***. See Kubes Comment.

On the way home from Green Valley, Texas our tow car (1946 Mercury) lost oil pressure. We drove the car and trailer to straddle a ditch and removed and re-installed the oil pan.

The pressure problem could not be repaired and we added several extra quarts of racing oil(all we had with us) and even some 90 wt. to create a "splash" system. As I recall it was more than 400 miles to home from that ditch and the Merc made it. And even more astounding is that the engine ran for another year with NO PARTS REPLACED after we fixed the gear slipping on rear of camshaft.

Just one of a thousand stories from my misspent youth with a racing addiction.

The Mercury has a 4" longer wheelbase. That 4" moves the front axle forward & makes the pan removal much easier than a Ford.
