Oil pan question

OK so how does one clean out the oil pan? It's off the engine but there's the dipper tray(?) to deal with. I thought I read some where that this snaps in and out. So far, no luck. Furthermore, there some gross s**T in the bottom and I haven't yet figured out where and how to put or dispose of this this black goo. Any suggestions?

Take a plastic sheet and place it on the driveway. Turn the pan over open side down and drop it on the plastic sheet. The dipper tray will come out.

The dipper tray does snap in place. dropping the oil pan , up side down on the ground will usually cause the dipper tray to pop out. If it doesn't work the first time, try, try again with more force.

Put it INSIDE a plastic trash bag and then do as Mike V. says.
Do you have a large plastic trash bin??.....................

The easiest way Ive found to remove the dipper tray without damage is to use a medium-large ball peen hammer. Put it into the oil pump opening and use it like a pry bar. Pops the tray right out.

Terry,

Once you've got the sludge and goo cleaned off the dipper-tray, examine the wells carefully for holes; I seen a few now with holes in them from crankcase acids... holes in the dipper wells can me oil starvation for the associated rod bearing.

They can be welded-up.
