Oil Pan Installation in car....

I took my oil pan off a couple weeks ago and now need to re-install it. How do you install the cork gasket at the rear of the pan? I can't believe that you balance it on the pan while trying to put the pan on, looks like you have to wedge it in the groove that the old one was in, is that right? I also can't remember whether the bolts went in from the top or bottom. Is there any sequence to it? Can I put some bolts in from the top to use as a temp. guide? Got the device to hold the oil pump in place and that's done but am I supposed to put the oil pump cover on the pan before I install it or after or doesn't it matter? This is an early car.

Anything anyone wants to add to advise me on this, please jump in. I want to have everything in order when I do this and get it right. My gasket material ( Right Stuff) says I need to torque things down within 5 minutes.

Thanks for any help

To help guide the pan into location, use two bolts that are 2"to 3" longer, and cut off the heads, then grind them to a point. I use #2 permatex, and lay on a generous bead on the block. The permatex is thick enough, and sticky enough,to hold the gasket in place over your head. The cork gasket, for the rear main should be preformed,in a tuna can.Soak the gasket in water first, then let it dry,in the can. That gasket should be installed with permatex as well. An extra dab of Permatex should be put in each corner of the bearing retainer(where two gaskets meet),and on the end of rope seal, where the seal meets the pan rail.
